Highlander is an Australian 5-piece Celtic Rock band from Newcastle, N.S.W. They specialise in performing traditional Scottish, Irish, and Australian folk music with a rhythmic beat, which essentially blends into a unique high energy, foot-tapping experience.
The band consists of Vocals, Highland Bagpipes, Scottish Smallpipes, Tin Whistle, Violin, Electric and Acoustic Guitar, Bass and Drums. Although most people love Highlander's refreshing approach to Scottish music, they can sometimes be deemed offensive by traditional pipers and dancers due to some of the arrangements they have in some traditional tunes.
"Traditional songs and tunes are a great insight into other peoples cultures. However if these songs and tunes are to survive for another 200 years or more, they must be made appealing to the younger audiences so that they are not partially forgotten".
Fortunately there are many pipers in Australia that agree with this statement although some did not like the idea initially. Similar reactions to the band in other parts of the world are a certainty.
Highlander is:
Justin Body - Vocals, Highland Bagpipes, Scottish Smallpipes and Tin Whistle
Nikalla Garrett - Violin
John Gottery - Vocals and Bass Guitar
Dave Venaglia - Acoustic and Electric Guitars
Rob Dilley - Drums and Percussion
